Decemeber 2011:  “The Lord has done this for us”

Through the prayers, fasting, and guidance of the Holy Spirit, San Antonio St. Mary’s Orthodox Chapel is elevated as St. Mary’s Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of San Antonio, a full-fledged church under the South-West America Diocese, by the encyclical (DSWA/CH/58/2011) of the Diocesan Bishop HG Alexios Mar Eusebius.  Rev. Fr. Dr. V.C. Varghese is appointed as the new vicar of this newly elevated church. In a brief meeting after the Holy Qurbana, Vicar and the entire congregation praised the Lord Almighty for the gift of recognition of the chapel as Church via Thirumeni’s Kalpana which was received with much enthusiasm and tears of joy. HG commended, in his encyclical, the achievements of members of the chapel in various spiritual organizations and activities to cultivate to be flourished as a Church in a short period. Also, HG expressed appreciation for the assistance of Rev. Fr. P. M. Cherian for the past year as the vicar and the cooperation of St. Gregorios Church Houston. We are told by the forefathers of the importance of dedicating our family and wealth to God and being thankful for the blessings we receive from God.  Rev Dr. V. C Varghese, the new Vicar, exhorted members to be model Christians and be a good witness in the San Antonio community and encouraged children to become the spiritual powerhouse by the intercession of St. Mary, the Mother of God, and all the Saints of our church especially St. Thomas, St. Gregorios of Parumala, and St.Dionysius and also our forefathers. The program concluded around 1:40 PM as everyone echoed St. Luke 1:25 that the Lord has done this for us… In these days He has shown his favor and taken away our disgrace among the people. To enliven the happy occasion, the Sunday school children had prepared a large cake for Achen to cut after the benediction. All church members & families participated in the historic occasion. Family of Mathew & Jolly Punchamannil provided us with lunch.

A resolution was read by Secretary Dr. George N. Varghese to thank and to express our loyalty to the Diocesan Bishop, and to HH Catholicose, and to the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in the occasion of granting a full-fledged Church status to our humble chapel.

Mr. Thomas K. Poovathoor read the condolence message to express our condolences to the Diocesan Bishop and to members of the Holy Episcopal Synod at the demise of H.G. Job Mar Philexenos Bishop of Delhi Diocese. Mar Philexenos was a renowned professor and a mentor for many of us, of this church during HG’s tenure at Pathanapuram St. Stephen’s College and at St. Stephen men’s Hostel.  As a tribute to his melodious voice, he was remembered as “Vanambadi" of Malankara Sabha
